EN590 Diesel Fuel
EN590 is the benchmark every modern diesel engine is designed around. If you run a fleet, a generator farm, or an industrial operation, this is the grade that keeps things clean, efficient, and compliant. At Coolak, we supply EN590 that meets the European standard end to end, backed by independent lab analysis on every shipment.
What EN590 Actually Is
EN590 is the European standard that defines automotive diesel fuel. It isn’t a brand or a blend, it’s a strict set of physical and chemical requirements that diesel must hit before it earns the name. The headline feature is sulfur content capped at 10 mg/kg (10 ppm), which is why you’ll often see it called Ultra-Low Sulfur Diesel (ULSD).
The point of the standard is simple: predictable combustion, lower emissions, and longer engine life, no matter where the fuel was refined.
Technical Specification
The table below reflects typical EN590 parameters. Every batch we ship comes with a Certificate of Analysis (COA) confirming compliance.
Property | Unit | EN590 Requirement |
|---|---|---|
Cetane number | – | min. 51 |
Cetane index | – | min. 46 |
Density at 15°C | kg/m³ | 820 – 845 |
Sulfur content | mg/kg | max. 10 |
Flash point | °C | above 55 |
Kinematic viscosity at 40°C | mm²/s | 2.0 – 4.5 |
Water content | mg/kg | max. 200 |
Total contamination | mg/kg | max. 24 |
Ash content | % m/m | max. 0.01 |
Carbon residue (10% bottoms) | % m/m | max. 0.30 |
Distillation, 95% recovery | °C | max. 360 |
Oxidation stability | g/m³ | max. 25 |
Why the Numbers Matter
A cetane number of 51 or higher means the fuel ignites faster and burns more completely. That translates to easier cold starts, quieter running, and less unburned fuel going out the exhaust.
The 10 ppm sulfur ceiling is what makes EN590 compatible with modern after-treatment systems like diesel particulate filters and SCR catalysts. High-sulfur fuel poisons those systems; EN590 protects them.
Controlled density and viscosity keep your injectors spraying the right amount of fuel at the right pressure. Too thin and you lose lubrication, too thick and atomization suffers. EN590 sits in the sweet spot.
Seasonal Grades
EN590 is produced in different climate-dependent grades to handle cold weather. The cold filter plugging point (CFPP) is adjusted so the fuel keeps flowing in winter without waxing up your filters. We supply the grade matched to your destination and season, so tell us where it’s headed.
Common Applications
EN590 powers a wide range of operations:
Commercial trucking and logistics fleets
Marine and inland shipping
Power generation and standby generators
Construction and mining equipment
Agricultural machinery
